Buckeye Farms is the largest egg-laying facility
in the midwest with millions of chickens confined in cramped
cages and forced to produce eggs for human consumption. In
the summer of 2001, a terrible tornado struck in Ohio and
obliterated Buckeye's buildings. The carnage was awful -
countless dead and dying hens everywhere. Perhaps the saddest
part was the plight of the surviving chickens. Buckeye authorities
decided to seal off the collapsed buildings and pump poisonous
gas inside to kill the hens that still lived. Animal activists
felt that the remaining chickens deserved better after all
they'd been through, and demanded access to rescue the hens.
Given a very short time frame, the activists liberated approximately
3000 chickens, who went to sanctuaries all across the U.S.
Fifteen of the survivors came to SASHA Farm. Penny and the
others scratch in the dirt, peck at their fresh vegetables
and grain, and can forget all about the horrible life they
experienced at Buckeye Farms.
