Turkeys

Gandolf

Gandalf started out as the main menu item for someone's Thanksgiving dinner. He had been purchased as a chick and was fed and raised with the intent of being served as the main course.  As the holiday approached, his owner had a change of heart. Instead of being eaten, he came to live at SASHA Farm where he quickly became the patriarch of the turkey flock. He displays his gorgeous feathers nearly all year round to remind the other turkeys of his role.

Scarecrow and TinMan came to us (presumably) from a factory farm after a tornado destroyed the barn they were living in with a reported 40,000 other birds. Can you imagine so many thousands of birds crammed into one barn? To keep them from injuring each other and lowering the value of their "meat," they were debeaked, meaning the tips of their beaks were removed, and the tips of their toes were cut off.

After the tornado hit, most of the survivors were quickly loaded onto trucks and sent to slaughter. These two had the good fortune to wander away from the devastation. They were picked up later by animal advocates who brought them to SASHA Farm. They were treated for their minor injuries, medicated for the parasites they were carrying, and introduced to our little turkey flock. They're still not sure that humans should be trusted, but they're learning a little more each day about life as a SASHA turkey. In addition to their wholesome turkey grain, they get blueberries, grapes, greens and other produce. We're watching them blossom from terrified, practically catatonic beings into confident, proud tom turkeys.

Sponsor an Animal!

At SASHA Farm, we provide life long care for almost 300 farmed animals. This is a big job, and you can help in a big way! Your sponsorship will help us provide food, veterinary care and a safe permanent home for the animal of your choosing and their friends.

Each animal has a sad story to tell of their lives before arriving at SASHA Farm. Browse through the animal profiles to get to know a few of our residents better and see how their lives have changed for the better since arriving at the sanctuary.

Animal sponsorships start at just $30. When one touches your heart, you can sponsor that animal here. You may also print that page and send your payment to PO Box 222, Manchester, MI 48158. Of course, not all the animal residents can be listed online, so you can also choose a species and let us select the individual most in need of a sponsor. You will receive a wonderful sponsor package including a certificate, letter, and photo within about two weeks.

Sponsorships also make great gifts!
