We have a variety of avian species at the sanctuary. Our bird residents include chickens, peafowl, guinea fowl, waterfowl, and Ellie the emu. Many of our feathery friends are located in one of the five coops on our property.

Meet Chicky

Chicky had quite an adventurous life before arriving at SASHA. She was once part of a small backyard flock in the city of Taylor, Michigan. Tragically, Chicky was the only survivor of a brutal predator attack. Seeking safety, she found refuge by roosting in a nearby tree, only venturing out during the early morning hours to search for food. One of the neighbors in the apartment complex where Chicky had taken shelter noticed her and began feeding her, providing water as well. Understanding that Chicky was frightened, they made sure to place the food and water in a safe spot, a shrub in front of the complex.

Meet Peeps

Peeps is an energetic and adorable young Rhode Island Red rooster with a big personality. His journey began when he, along with a few other hens, was part of a classroom science experiment. When humans take on the responsibility of raising baby chicks, they typically expect most of them to be female. That was exactly what the school anticipated when they started caring for these chicks—until Peeps surprised everyone by starting to crow and exhibit classic rooster behaviors.

Meet Ellie

Emus are native to Australia and are one of the largest living birds but are unable to fly, however they can run up tp 31mph! They enjoy taking baths, eating fruit, and receiving cuddles from their human caretakers. Ellie, our emu, is no different! Ellie came from an outdoor garden store in Detroit where she was on display as an attraction. Two kind men rescued her from her stressful and miserable life and brought her to SASHA Farm in July 2019. Due to all the stress in her life, she had some issues getting adjusted, but with the loving kindness of the SASHA staff and volunteers, she is making great progress! And what a beauty she is.

Meet The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turkeys

Meet the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! This fantastic group of four made their debut in 2022 as tiny little babies. Coconut, Jack, Tater Tot, and Waffles came to us as part of an “accidental hatch” situation and needed a new home. Fortunately, we had the space and were happy to take them in. What we didn’t expect, however, was that one of the chicks turned out to be a female!
